The best spot to grow fresh produce, but difficult to protect from rain and sun, as well as the wind and insect attack that is the reality of the urban environment. Many windowsills and balconies have already been repurposed into plant areas by various people around the world.

Unlike in a greenhouse, which doesn't provide natural ventilation, these systems invert through a series of vent holes. As with any outdoor planter, when it rains, water rushes through these cracks.

The former image of this concept is a drawing by the Canadian botanist Andrew Deaver in 1927 and the experimentations were made by the scientists during World War II. These include plant growth chambers, see here, which consist of boxes with temperature controls which exclude light, allowing for fast growth.

However, there are some advantages and disadvantages to this kind of artificial system. One of the main advantages of these systems is that these allow indoor gardening with up to 16 hours of uninterrupted light during the day. This is the main reason why many people opt for this kind of a system.

These indoor gardens allow people to grow their own produce right in their homes without having to transport their foods to and from markets or stores, which can be extremely expensive depending on where you live and how far you live from the markets.

This does allow you to grow a great variety of crops and seasonal vegetables but, even with this many people often find it hard to make the most of their gardens as they don't get enough sun for some crops.

Regardless, they do often provide a more aesthetic alternative to many people in an urban environment than traditional gardening.

For people who are always on the go and are concerned about natural resources or the sustainability of traditional farming methods, the indoor gardening boxes can be a helpful way of food production while being a part of a greener environment.

Indoor gardening boxes: How to build one

Indoor garden boxes are simple to build. In fact, many gardening boxes are simpler than greenhouse and are even made from items that you probably already have in your home.

However, it is often difficult to find the pieces you need when it comes to building a plastic greenhouse or these plant boxes.

For a small garden the size of this one, most people don't need to build a greenhouse. But, for a larger garden, or even for an entire home, it may be easier to go for a greenhouse.

So, for a small indoor garden, you can build your own. The following steps will guide you through the process of making an indoor garden box.

Step 1: Measure your window

The most important part of building a small garden box for indoor gardening is finding the right spot for it.

The size of the box is entirely up to you. Some people choose to make the boxes very large while others have limited space and choose a smaller one.

However, the key is finding the right size for the specific type of box you are making. The shape of the box will depend on the type of plant you are growing, but also the type of environment you have in mind.

Remember that you will be limited to having just a small indoor garden. If you want to plant vegetables like tomatoes, beans, peas, or other types of fruit, you will need more space than what a small box offers.

For example, these two seedling boxes:

As you can see, they are both made from the same pattern and are the same size.

However, one is for seeds while the other one is for seedlings. Seeds can grow in much smaller boxes and tend to grow more quickly than seedlings.

If you don't need a large box and are satisfied with a small one, then choose the largest size you can while still being able to transport the box and maintain it properly.

It is not necessary to build a larger box just because you need a bigger one. What really matters is finding the perfect size that works best for your needs.

Step 2: Make a grid

The most common types of boxes for indoor gardening are the ones that are made of plastic. These are basically simple plastic containers and have to be supported from the bottom.

To build one, you have to make a grid by placing small, wood blocks underneath the bottom of the box. Once the blocks are in place, you need to fill it with sand or stone to hold it all in place.

Alternatively, you can use wooden blocks and a hole puncher to make the grid instead of blocks.

Step 3: Attach to a wall

Once your grid is ready, you can use your choice of an adhesive to attach the box to a wall. Depending on the type of wall you choose, you can use a wall mounted bracket or make your own wood or brick brackets.

In many cases, these boxes are used to house or grow seedlings and not actual plants.

Therefore, if you plan on using these boxes as garden boxes, you can skip the next step. However, for many indoor gardeners, these boxes are simply used to hold seedlings, so there are a few more steps to go through.

Step 4: Install lighting

One of the biggest problems for a gardener is the lack of light. A garden box is usually only used for growing seedlings.

However, as seedlings need a lot of light, they need a lot of light to grow.

If you plan on growing plants with edible parts like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, or other leafy greens, they will need more light to flourish.

You should use the brightest bulbs you can to get enough light for seedlings.

However, don't forget to also light up the whole room as light helps plants grow.

Step 5: Create a drainage system

An indoor garden box needs a drainage system.

The reasons are simple, a container without drainage will produce water, which is dangerous for plants, as they can get rooted to the sides and then rot when they put too much of the water in their
