This December, I had the opportunity to share with about 20 Southern Land Company fellow employees my design techniques of making a gorgeous, display-ready Christmas tree. If an employee possesses a valuable perspective, Tim Downey, our CEO tries to figure out a way to spread that expertise horizontally through the company. We are blessed here at SLC to have educated, experienced experts in many different fields including architecture, finance, and land acquisitions, to name a few. My area of expertise is horticulture. Basically, my job is to use my knowledge of landscape design to beautify our properties in the Greater Nashville area.

Marisa McCoy – a love for all things horticulture

The purpose of The Garden Club of America is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence, and publications, and to restore, improve, and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement.

Founded in , The Garden Club of America is a volunteer, nonprofit c 3 organization comprised of member clubs and approximately 18, club members throughout the country. For more than twenty-five years, the Shreveport Garden Study Club has partnered with the city of Shreveport, Louisiana, to restore the Greenwood Cemetery, established in , to its original beauty as one of the first great cemetery parks in the South.

Last November, the club gathered in celebration of two major gifts pledged toward the restoration of this historic cemetery. Following in the footsteps of two previous virtual conferences, the Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference and the Conservation Study Conference, the Floral Design Conference Celebrations brought club members together, virtually, for a day of insightful instruction, fresh ideas, updates on sustainable practices, and astounding winter arrangements from some of the greatest names in floral arts.

The garden was born out of a desire to teach the importance of using native plants in gardens and a concern for dwindling green space in Delray Beach due to increased development.

Today, the Educational Heritage Garden is a place to not only experience peace and tranquility, but to learn about local history through nature in the form of an outdoor classroom. In spring , RGC members will return to the park to plant a selection of native plants.

It restores a site along the Towpath Trail where invasive plants had choked out native plants. The Garden Club of America offers 28 merit-based scholarships and fellowships in 12 areas related to conservation, ecology, horticulture, and pollinator research.

Participants will come away with a process for setting up a highly profitable and regenerative organic market garden. Big picture thinking and theory of how plants interact in an ecosystem are integrated into how we can support and enhance how they do best in a market garden with in-the-field examples. Our teaching is led with biology-first principles that are applied to maximising yields, plant health, carbon drawdown, water retention and reducing pest pressure. These principles are inspired by and work with nature. They help us connect into the regenerating potential and liveliness of the land we are working with. We teach no till, no chemical spray methods and utilise biointensive polycropping techniques based on the CSA community supported agriculture model.
