Landscaping sic code

Landscaping sic code of ethics for landscape architecture is a good one, but has limitations. It states that landscape professionals should “observe respect for human rights, ecological balance, cultural heritage, sustainable development, the dignity and worth of individuals, and the value of life.” Those are lovely words, but I feel like when you start doing a little research into this code of ethics and you see that all the land conservation codes in the United States are based off of the “code of ethics of the Association of Landscape Professionals.” So why did they decide that it was okay to start calling that one the code of ethics of landscape professionals?

Well, because that’s what it is. The ALPSC code of ethics and the Code of Ethics for Landscape Designers of the International Association of Landscape and Urban Planning are very similar, and the two are so similar, the first is usually given before the second, in some cases.

You see, there are some differences that are actually important. For one thing, the Association of Landscape Professionals has a code of ethics that it claims to be based off of. However, it doesn’t really have one. It calls itself “a grass roots, not for profit, 501(c)3 non-profit organization,” which is nice, but doesn’t really tell you much. It also says that the Association of Landscape Professionals was “founded in 1983 in Washington D.C.,” which is also nice, but it means nothing. So, what is it that sets the Association of Landscape Professionals and the Landscape Designers Association apart? Well, the Landscape Designers Association’s code of ethics has a lot more, and that is because it is the only code of ethics that is not based off of the ALPSC code of ethics.

So, how much more do the Landscape Designers Association’s code of ethics have? Well, I’ll just go through them and compare. The first one is this:

Landscape designers, landscape architects and designers of the built environment possess a unique responsibility as a key service provider to their clients, communities and the built environment. They are responsible for creating, designing, maintaining and evaluating the built environment and the natural environment. They are responsible for maintaining a professional and ethical work ethic, promoting a positive work environment, and providing high quality service in accordance with their training and industry standards.

That’s really pretty similar, I suppose, but what it lacks in comparison to the ALPSC code of ethics is is all the things about “respect for others” and “responsibility for the environment,” which is kind of the reason why the ALPSC code is what it is. So, that is what the Landscape Designers Association code does have over the ALPSC code. It doesn’t have that environmental/social responsibility part.

I suppose, and again, I don’t really know, that the Landscape Designers Association’s code of ethics, if you look through it, is more geared towards what the Landscape Designers Association does, which is the design of the landscape and the built environment, and less towards what the ALPSC does, which is everything under the sun.

So, that is really all I have to say about the Landscape Designers Association’s code of ethics. So, now I have to say about the ALPSC code of ethics, but I will be brief.

The ALPSC code of ethics is very very similar to the Landscape Designers Association’s code of ethics. There are a couple of differences. The most significant difference is that the ALPSC code is based off of the USGBC Code of Ethics, which are the environmental sustainability codes, whereas the Landscape Designers Association’s code is based off the FASFC – it is for the FASFC and the American Society of Landscape Architects. So, that is the biggest difference. The other major difference is in paragraph four of the ALPSC code of ethics, which is in reference to the professional activities of the landscape architect, they say, “The responsibility for the public welfare, and that of the public environment, requires the utmost integrity.” So, this is the code that the ALPSC and the U.S. EPA has put together that is applicable to landscape architects. The Landscape Designers Association code does not have that clause in the code.

This is the ALPSC code of ethics.

This is the ALPSC code of ethics.

I want to go back to what I said at the beginning of this video, that both organizations could be useful to landscape architects. For example, we see the ALPSC is very active in bringing the profession, landscape architects, to the EPA. So, they are definitely a place where you could get your foot in the door and try to get access to the EPA, and try to advocate on behalf of landscape architects.

However, in order to work for the EPA, you do need a license, and a license would be through the ALPSC, and the process to go from there is that you apply for the exam. If you do well on the exam, and you pass the exam, then you are officially licensed. Then you can go on to work for the EPA.

The Landscape Designers Association does not have the EPA certification process that the ALPSC has. So, if you want to work for the EPA, or advocate on behalf of landscape architects, it is better to go through the ALPSC. In fact, the ALPSC will pay you to learn the process and help you become an ALPSC registered landscape architect, so it is actually better to go through the ALPSC.

However, if you are a landscape architect, it is good to get your name out there. If you have your license and you are active in your field, you can go out and market yourself as an example of an active landscape architect. You can put a profile out there and advertise your name.

Now, the important thing is to know that the Landscape Designers Association is there to help landscape architects. The ALPSC is there to help landscape architects. Both organizations are very active. They are not meant to be anti-to each other. We have the same goal. Landscape architecture is something that is very needed, something that is very useful for the environment and for all of us. So, we should not argue or hate on each other, but we should promote and use both organizations.
